Abstract
The present invention relates to an electrolyte for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide comprising a hydrophilic ionic liquid and water, wherein the hydrophilic protic ionic liquid comprises an anion that is a Brønsted base conjugate to a Brønsted acid. The invention further related to a process for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide using the electrolyte of the invention.
