Abstract

A process for producing a carbon monoxide rich product stream by electrolysis of carbon dioxide in an electrolyzer, in which carbon monoxide is separated from a cathode product stream in a first separation device to form a carbon monoxide rich product stream and a first off-gas stream containing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, and in which oxygen is separated from an anode product stream in a second separation device to form an oxygen rich product stream and a second off-gas stream containing oxygen and carbon dioxide. The first off-gas stream and the second off-gas stream are supplied to an oxidizing device, in which the oxygen of the second off-gas stream is at least partially reacted with carbon monoxide present in the first off-gas stream to form carbon dioxide, whereby an oxygen depleted stream containing carbon dioxide is formed and recycled to the electrolyzer.
