Abstract

Provided herein are compositions and methods for removing a coating, such as an environmental barrier coating (EBC), from a substrate. By some approaches, a method for removing a coating from a substrate comprises contacting the coating with a salt, the salt being a solid. The method also involves heating the coating and the salt to a temperature at or above the melting point of the salt to convert the coating to a dissolvable reaction product by fusion of the coating with the salt. After forming the dissolvable reaction product, the product is then dissolved using an acid to remove at least a portion of the coating from the substrate.
