Abstract

A surgical system may be associated with cutting and retraction of tissues. The system may include a processor that is configured to work with a surgical cutting instrument and a retraction instrument. The processor may identify a current surgical task, determine the proximity of nearby structures, and calculate a retraction force direction and an intensity. Based on retraction force direction and intensity, the system may generate a control signal that directs the retraction instrument to apply the calculated force, which may allow for the first tissue to be retracted and the second tissue to be cut by the surgical cutting instrument.
