Abstract
The present invention relates to the use of amphiphilic compounds as antimicrobial agents specifically effective against obligate anaerobic bacteria under strict anaerobic conditions. The compounds include glyceryl ethers, glyceryl esters, sorbitan esters, isosorbide esters, and N-methyl cyclic glucamides of formula (I):wherein R is a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon chain having 5 to 23 carbon atoms. The compounds demonstrate antimicrobial activity against clinically relevant obligate anaerobic bacteria when tested under strict anaerobic conditions that accurately reflect the natural environments where these bacteria thrive. The invention provides compounds for therapeutic and non-therapeutic uses targeting obligate anaerobic bacteria, as well as antimicrobial compositions suitable for personal care, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical applications.
