Abstract

The present invention enables an accurate measurement of running speed even in running regions with a decrease in measurement accuracy of a CW millimeter-wave speed sensor, such as a pit track in a rail yard, a bridge area and the like.For this purpose, a speed detection apparatus including a speed sensor and a sensor selector. The speed sensor is capable of switching between modes for a CW (Continuous Wave) scheme and a FMCW (Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave) scheme. The speed selector selects the FMCW scheme for the speed sensor at or below a predetermined speed, and selects the CW scheme in other speed regions.As required, a plurality of speed detection apparatuses is installed in a train formation and also each speed detection apparatus includes an SNR determination unit. When the detection accuracy of one of the speed detection apparatuses decreases, the mode of another speed detection apparatus is changed for a certain period of time in order to acquire accurately the running speed of a car with stability.
