Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for estimating, measuring or monitoring a gust or wind speed component acting on a suspended cable span of an overhead electrical power line through the dynamic response from the wind-induced excitation, or aerodynamic force, upon said suspended cable span, comprising the following steps :- sensing a tension, vibration, strain or motion of said suspended cable span by using a local or distributed sensing device having access to local, respectively distributed, estimates of said tension, vibration, strain or motion ;- according the buffeting theory model, calculating the root mean square, or RMS, σ<sup>2</sup> of the suspended cable span dynamic response corresponding to said estimated local or distributed tension, vibration, strain or motion, said root mean square being obtained from the integral of the power spectral density, or PSD, S<sub>R</sub>(ω) of said dynamic response, said RMS being obtained by signal frequency analysis : σ2=∫SRωdω;- and calculating the PSD of the gust or wind speed component, S<sub>wind</sub>(ω), as a function of the PSD of said dynamic response, S<sub>R</sub>(ω).
