Abstract

The present invention relates to a thin film photovoltaic unit (100) and a photoelectrochemical module (200) comprising such a photovoltaic unit. The present invention further relates to methods for forming such a photovoltaic unit and such a photoelectrochemical module and to a use of such a module. The photovoltaic unit comprises a transparent substrate (120), at least two photovoltaic cells (1111, 1112, 1121, 1122), a front contact layer (125), an absorber layer (130) and a back contact layer (135). The photovoltaic unit is divided into a first photovoltaic subunit (111) and a second photovoltaic subunit (112), each of which comprises one or more of the photovoltaic cells that are series connected with each other. In each photovoltaic subunit, the back contact layer (135) comprises a first region (1351) that is electrically connected with the front contact (125) of one of the photovoltaic cells of the respective photovoltaic subunit, and a second region (1352) that serves as a back contact of one of the photovoltaic cells of the respective photovoltaic subunit. The first and the second photovoltaic subunits (111, 112) share a common first region (1351) of the back contact layer. A cathode (160) is electrically connected with the first region (1351) of the back contact layer, and an anode (170) is electrically connected with the second region (1352) of the back contact layer within each photovoltaic subunit.
