Abstract
An apparatus and method for adaptively calibrating a splicer are described. The method comprises receiving a first image of a portion of a hollow core fiber, the hollow core fiber comprising a splice produced by the splicer, wherein the portion of the hollow core fibre in the first image is proximate to the splice. The first image is analysed to detect a feature associated with the first image, the feature representing a property of the portion of the hollow core fibre. Using the feature, an adjustment to be made to a parameter of the splicer is computed, wherein the adjustment is computed so as to target one or more of a reduced optical propagation loss and a higher strength, of a subsequent splice of hollow core fiber which is produced by the splicer after initiating the adjustment. The method further comprises initiating the adjustment of the parameter of the splicer.
