Abstract
The present disclosure relates to methods and apparatuses for intra prediction that serves for reconstructing an image block of an image or video. The intra prediction comprises determining an intra-prediction mode for predicting the image block. When the intra-prediction mode is one of a set of decoder-derived prediction modes, the intra prediction comprises (a) determining one or more prediction directions from already reconstructed pixels of the image; and (b) obtaining a prediction block of the image block by performing an intra prediction which, irrespectively of the one or more prediction directions, (i) comprises application of a direction-based extrapolation according to the one or more prediction directions and based on one or more reference pixels that are pixels adjacent to the image block; and (ii) does not comprise a matrix multiplication with matrices based on the one or more prediction directions. The set of decoder-derived prediction modes includes a first mode based on performing edge detection at individual reference pixel positions adjacent to the image block.
