Abstract
The present invention is directed a process for producing a isotropic carbon precursor is provided comprising (a) a higher-pressure/high-temperature step (HPTR) comprising heating a petroleum-based raw material and maintaining the temperature between 430-700°C at a pressure above 10 barg, for a residence time between 3 and 30min, (b) subsequently quenching and (c) a low-pressure/low-temperature step (LPTR) maintaining the temperature between 300-430°C and pressure below 1 barg for a residence time between 1 and 40 hours under continuous stirring.
