Abstract

The present invention relates to an illumination device (109) of or for a vehicle (50), comprising a light source (12, 12L, 12R) for providing light rays (Ir), an optical element (14) for guiding or directing the light rays (Ir) through the Illumination device (109), the optical element (14) comprising at least two light guides (16) arranged adjacent to each other, a cover layer (22), a switchable layer (28) switchable between a first state in which the switchable layer (28) is transparent for incident light rays (Ir) and a second state in which the switchable layer (28) reflects the incident light rays (Ir), or a polychrome switchable layer (28) switchable between a first state in which the switchable layer (28) is of a first color, and a second state in which the switchable layer (28) reflects the incident light rays (Ir) and is of a second color, the optical element (14) arranged between the cover layer (22) and the switchable layer (28), a power supply (30) for applying a voltage on the switchable layer (28), and a switching element (32) for turning on and off the power supply (30).
