Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for selectively recovering cobalt from lithium ion batteries (LIBs) which comprises: (i) providing a black mass containing metals; (ii) leaching the black mass obtaining a first solution containing said metals; (iii) basifying the first solution to obtain a precipitate comprising cobalt; (iv) dissolving the precipitate with concentrated HCl, HBr, or HI, obtaining a second solution which is evaporated to obtain a crude product comprising CoX<2> (with X being Cl, Br, or I), (v) forming an organometallic cobalt complex by contacting the crude product with an organic ligand of formula (I) in the presence of a mixture of solvents; and (vi) separating the cobalt and the chelating agent from the organometallic complex formed by means of liquid-liquid extraction. Furthermore, the invention relates to the use of an organic ligand of formula (I) for recovering cobalt from LIB.
