Abstract

Devices and methods for processing ultrasound images of manufactured parts to determine cracks in the parts. The devices comprise an imaging device with one or more ultrasonic transducer arrays that emit and receive ultrasound waves at various angles and distances, and a processing circuit that filters, beamforms, and compounds the ultrasound data to generate images of the tubulars. The methods involve insonating the tubulars with plane waves at non-zero or zero angles, applying a specular or anti-specular filter to the ultrasound scans, identifying a wall region between the inner and outer surfaces of the tubulars, and identifying a crack region by the presence of a signal void or a mode conversion of the ultrasound waves. The size of the crack is determined by measuring the dimensions of the crack region or fitting a geometric model to the compounded image.
