Abstract

Devices and methods are described for non-destructive testing of materials and components using multiple imaging modalities, such as ultrasound and optical imaging, to generate three-dimensional data volumes that can identify flaws, such as cracks. The devices comprise an imaging tool with an ultrasound array and an optical system, which are coupled to a first and a second block regions, respectively. The block may be separated by an interface layer that is sonically transparent and optically reflective. The methods involve emitting and receiving ultrasound signals from the ultrasound array, receiving optical signals from the optical system, determining a pose for the imaging tool, and assembling the ultrasound and optical images to create a multimodal image volume assembly. The devices and methods can be used for imaging pipelines and manufactured parts, such as airplane wings, to provide accurate and intuitive information about the structural integrity and environmental impact of the tubulars.
