Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for driving a syringe pump. The syringe pump includes a syringe, a pusher movably received within a barrel of the syringe, and a drive assembly associated to the pusher and configured to be actuated to move the pusher through the barrel. The drive assembly includes a lead screw associated to the pusher, a planetary gearbox, a first motor associated to the lead screw via the planetary gearbox, and a second motor associated to the lead screw via the planetary gearbox. Actuation of the first motor and/or the second motor causes rotation of the lead screw so as to cause movement of the pusher through the barrel, with the direction and speed of the movement of the pusher through the barrel being dependent upon the direction of rotation and the rotational rate of the lead screw.
