Abstract
A superconducting magnet includes a vacuum vessel containing superconducting magnet windings and a persistent current switch (PCS) operative to switch the magnet between a persist mode and a ramp mode. A cryogenic cold head has a cold station thermally connected with the superconducting magnet windings to cool the superconducting magnet windings. A thermosiphon thermally connects the cold station of the cryogenic cold head with the PCS. A pneumatic valve has an expansion chamber, and is configured to block flow of working fluid through the thermosiphon when the expansion chamber is above a threshold temperature and to pass flow of the working fluid through the thermosiphon when the expansion chamber is below the threshold temperature. The thermosiphon has a liquid drop, and a heater is arranged to heat the liquid drop to boil working fluid contained in the liquid drop to accelerate startup of the thermosiphon.
