Abstract

The invention relates to a method of initializing a data carrier (10). The method comprises providing personalization data (21, S110), using the personalization data (21) and a personalization entity key (32) to generate a main shard (33, S120), establishing a connection (41) between a mobile device (40) and a data carrier (10, S130), activating the data carrier (10) by generating at least a first shard (51) and a second shard (61) by a secure element (12) of the data carrier (10, S140), transmitting the first shard (51) to a first server entity (50) and the second shard (61) to a second server entity (60, S150), and storing the first and the second shard (61) in the first and the second server entity (50, 60), respectively (S160). The invention also relates to a method of restoring a user key, as well as to a system (1) for initializing a data carrier (10) and to a system (2) for restoring a user key.
