Abstract

A personal care device is for application against the skin, such as an IPL device. An optical displacement sensor generates a displacement signal representative of a displacement of the device relative to the skin and a movement sensor generates a movement signal representative of an absolute movement of the device. The displacement signal is used to generate a first contribution to a movement output signal and the movement signal is used to generate a second contribution to the movement output signal. The movement output signal is generated primarily or entirely based the first contribution when the displacement signal is determined to be reliable, and primarily or entirely based on the second contribution when the displacement signal is determined to be not reliable. In this way, relative displacement sensing and absolute motion sensing are combined to accurately track movement of the device.
