Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for the production of hydrogen gas and a solid carbon product selected from the group consisting of graphene, graphite and mixtures thereof. The process comprises the steps of feeding an educt gas into a plasma section of a reactor in a direction different from the longitudinal axis of the reactor, converting the educt gas into a plasma having a temperature of more than 3,000 K by flowing the educt gas through an electric arc discharge, quenching the plasma and/or gas obtained from the plasma with a cooling rate of more than 1,000 K/s from a temperature of more than 3,000 K to a temperature of below 3,000 K. The educt gas comprises CH<4> and has an atomic H/C ratio of ≥ 4.0. The invention furthermore provides a device for the production of hydrogen gas and a solid carbon product selected from the group consisting of graphene, graphite and mixtures thereof or for the production of hydrogen gas and a modified solid carbon product selected from the group consisting of doped graphene, doped graphite and mixtures thereof.
