Abstract
A device for determining in use when a user is exercising below, at or above the anaerobic threshold, the device comprising an ultrasound transducer and a processor wherein: the ultrasound transducer is signal connected to the processor and the ultrasound transducer is arranged in use to: be attached to the body of the user before and during exercise; send a series of ultrasound waves at a doppler angle of between 0 and 80 degrees to a blood flow in the body before exercise begins; receive a first series of ultrasound wave reflections back from the blood flow with a doppler shift; and send a series of ultrasound waves at the same doppler angle of between 0 and 80 degrees to a blood flow in the body during exercise; receive a second series of ultrasound wave reflections back from the blood flow with a doppler shift; and send the ultrasound wave data to the processor; wherein the processor is configured to: receive ultrasound wave data from the ultrasound transducer and: determine, at a first period in the cardiac phase, the doppler shift of the series of ultrasound waves sent to the blood flow before exercise; determine, at a second period in the cardiac phase corresponding to the first period in the cardiac phase, the doppler shift of the series of ultrasound waves sent to the blood flow during exercise; and calculate a velocity growth factor based on the doppler shifts at the first and second corresponding periods in the cardiac phases; and compare the velocity growth factor with a predetermined anaerobic velocity growth factor or a predetermined anaerobic velocity growth factor range; and determine that the user is: exercising below the anaerobic threshold if the velocity growth factor is less than the anaerobic velocity growth factor or less than the lower limit of the anaerobic velocity growth factor range; or exercising at the anaerobic threshold if the velocity growth factor is equal to the anaerobic velocity growth factor or within the anaerobic velocity growth factor range; or exercising above the anaerobic threshold if the velocity growth factor is greater than the anaerobic velocity growth factor or greater than the upper limit of the anaerobic velocity growth factor range.
