Abstract

The present invention provides: a hyaluronic acid derivative which, after having been gelled, is highly inhibited from swelling in the living body; a gel of a crosslinked hyaluronic acid derivative; and a pharmaceutical composition including the hyaluronic acid derivative or the gel of a crosslinked hyaluronic acid derivative. This hyaluronic acid derivative comprises hyaluronic acid having steryl groups introduced into at least some of the carboxyl groups contained in the glucuronic acid moieties of the hyaluronic acid and having maleimide groups introduced into at least some of either the carboxyl groups contained in the glucuronic acid moieties of the hyaluronic acid or the hydroxyl groups contained in the N-acetylglucosamine moieties thereof. This gel of a crosslinked hyaluronic acid derivative is a gel-like material obtained by chemically cross-linking the hyaluronic acid derivative with a cross-linking agent having two or more cross-linking groups.
