Abstract
The present invention proposes a method for producing manganese carbide that can reduce the CO<2> emissions. In this method, a reduction treatment of manganese ore is performed by heating the manganese ore to a treatment temperature corresponding to an unmelted state and bringing the manganese ore into contact with a mixed gas of hydrogen gas and hydrocarbon gas under atmospheric pressure. It is preferable that the partial pressure of the hydrocarbon gas in the mixed gas be set to 10.0 kPa or higher, and that the number of hydrogen atoms in the mixed gas be set to at least 12 times that of the carbon atoms. It is preferable that the treatment temperature be set to be within a range of 800°C or higher and lower than a melting temperature T<m>. It is preferable that the particle diameter of the manganese ore be adjusted to 3 mm or larger and 100 mm or smaller; that the treatment be performed in a rotary kiln; that the hydrocarbon gas be supplied at a position where the temperature inside the rotary kiln is 700°C or higher; etc. Also proposed is a method for producing manganese-containing steel that includes a step of adding the manganese carbide thus obtained to molten steel.
