Abstract

The invention relates to a system for storage and production of electrical energy, wherein electrical energy is converted to thermal energy for storage, and thermal energy is converted to electrical energy for production. CO<2> is stored temporarily and/or permanently in a geological formation. The system comprises a surface portion and a subsurface portion. The subsurface portion comprises at least one underground reservoir, which is configured for temporary and/or permanent CO<2> storage. It has at least one caprock layer positioned above the reservoir and at least one well in communication with the at least one reservoir and the surface portion. The surface portion comprises a charging cycle, which is configured for storage of electrical energy, a discharging cycle, which is configured for production of electrical energy, and means for thermal energy storage. The subsurface portion and the surface portion are in communication with each other via a working fluid.
