Abstract
A hydrogen internal combustion engine (100) comprises one or more combustion units (10). Each combustion unit (10) includes a combustion chamber (11) configured to receive a mixture of hydrogen (H2) and oxygen containing gas (O2). An intake channel (12c) with an intake mechanism (12v) allows the oxygen containing gas to enter the combustion chamber (11). A compression mechanism (13) compresses the chamber volume, after which a fuel injector (14) injects hydrogen under pressure into the compressed volume. Combustion (CB) of the compressed hydrogen-oxygen mixture causes the chamber volume to expand, driving the compression mechanism (13). An exhaust channel (15c) with an exhaust mechanism (15v) allows discharge of the resulting combustion product (H2O). A catalytic ignition assembly (18) with catalytic material (C) promotes ignition (IG) of the compressed hydrogen-oxygen mixture to initiate combustion. This configuration may enable autoignition of hydrogen without requiring conventional ignition systems like spark plugs or pilot fuel.
