Abstract

A self-piercing rivet (1) for producing a joint has a rectangular or trapezoidal basic shape and comprises a rivet head (2) and a rivet shaft (3). The rivet shaft (3) consists of two shaft legs (4) which are spaced apart and project vertically from the rivet head (2) in one direction. The rivet head (2) and the shaft legs (4) delimit a recess (7), the opening (8) of which opens into the side opposite the rivet head (2). The shaft legs (4) taper in width from the rivet head (2) towards their shaft leg bases (9), but remain constant in height, wherein the shaft leg bases (9) each have a wedge-shaped end (23) arranged on the outside near the side surfaces (5) or near the recess. The shaft legs (4) are adapted to spread inwards or outwards during joining.
