Abstract
A directed energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing system (100) for manufacturing a component (102) from a material includes a deposition assembly (120) having a deposition head (122) through which material is deposited to form a top surface (102c) of a component (102). The top surface (102c) defines a width (w) measured in millimeters (mm). The deposition assembly (120) also includes compression rig (140) having a compression head (246). The compression head (246) is configured to apply a compressive force (F) measured in kilonewtons (kN) to the top surface (102c) of the component (102). The compression rig (140) also defines a target load (Y).
