Abstract
A device for controlling a traction converter comprises a monitor unit (402) to monitor a status of at least one component of the traction converter (300) over time to generate monitoring information. An analysis module (403) determines an operating mode based on the monitoring information. A controller (401) controls the traction converter according to the operating mode. Monitoring information can be indicative of a status of a power semiconductor (S1-S6) of the traction converter, a direct current link capacitor (C<sub>OC</sub>) of the traction converter, or a heatsink (302) of the traction converter.
