Abstract

A negative electrode for a rechargeable lithium battery comprises a negative electrode current collector and a negative electrode active material layer on the negative electrode current collector. The negative electrode active material layer includes a first negative electrode active material, a second negative electrode active material, a binder, and a conductive material. The first negative electrode active material is in the form of particles that each comprise silicon nanoparticles aggregated together and an amorphous carbon coating layer surrounding the silicon nanoparticles. The particles of the first negative electrode active material have a sphericity (S) of about 0.9 to about 1.0. The second negative electrode active material comprises crystalline carbon. The negative electrode active material layer has a mixture density of more than about 1.6 g/cc to not more than about 1.7 g/cc.
