Abstract

A medical illumination device (40) and a medical system for supplying a light beam into a medical instrument (10) having a light guide (25), in particular of an endoscopic instrument, comprises a light source unit (44) having at least one light source (46), an optical fiber unit (50) having a light source end (502) connectable to the light source unit (44) and an instrument end (504) connectable to the medical instrument (10), an diaphragm unit (60) moveably arranged between the at least one light source (46) and the optical fiber unit (50), and a drive unit (85) for moving the diaphragm unit (60) relative to the optical fiber unit (50). The diaphragm unit (60) comprises several openings (600) each comprising a different diameter. The optical fiber unit (50) comprises a plurality of optical fibers (510) in an ordered arrangement such that an input end (512) and an output end (514) of the optical fibers are located at equal radial distance to a longitudinal axis (L) of the optical fiber unit (50). The drive unit (85) moves the diaphragm unit (60) such that a selected opening (602; 604; 606; 608) is positioned in a light beam (42) provided by the light source unit (44) for defining a diameter of an input light beam (43) entering the medical instrument (10). A method for supplying a light beam into the medical instrument (10) selects an opening (600) to be moved into the light beam (42) according to at least one operating parameter value of the medical instrument (10) for defining a diameter of the input light beam (43) entering the light guide (10).
