Abstract

A catheter system (110) for treating a lesion (112) in a vessel (111) of a subject includes a dilator catheter (120) and a therapy catheter (130) configured for insertion in the vessel. The dilator catheter has a main portion (122) and a tapered portion (123) configured to compress the lesion as the dilator catheter is advanced through the vessel, where the tapered portion increases from a first diameter at a distal end of the tapered portion to a second diameter at a transition between the tapered and main portions. The therapy catheter houses a delivery system (133) for a therapy device (135) configured to remove a portion of the lesion while the lesion is compressed by the dilator catheter.
