Abstract

A hearing system (2) with a hearing instrument (4) to be worn in or at an ear of a user and a method for operating the hearing instrument (4) are provided. During operation of the hearing instrument (4), a sound signal from an environment of the hearing instrument (4) is captured and processed to support the hearing of the user. The processed sound signal (O) is output to the user. In an onset recognition step of the signal processing, the captured sound signal (I) is analyzed to recognize onsets of spoken phonemes. In an onset enhancement step, the processed sound signal is momentarily modified, when an onset of a spoken phoneme is recognized, to enhance said onset. Herein, the processed sound signal (O) is momentarily modified by selectively increasing the signal level of the processed sound signal in a first frequency sub-range.
