Abstract

An aerosol generating system (1) is described. The aerosol generating system includes an aerosol generating article (4), and an aerosol generating device (2) being adapted to receive, in use, the aerosol generating article (4) in a selected one of a plurality of different physical orientations. The aerosol generating article (4) has a pair of first electrical contacts (12a, 12b), and the aerosol generating device (2) has three (or more) second electrical contacts 10a, 10b and 10c. The pair of first electrical contacts (12a, 12b) is electrically connectable to a first pair (10a, 10b) of the second electrical contacts when the aerosol generating article (4) is received in the aerosol generating device (2) in a first orientation, and the pair of first electrical contacts (12a, 12b) is electrically connectable to a different second pair (10a, 10c) of the second electrical contacts when the aerosol generating article (4) is received in the aerosol generating device (2) in a second orientation, different from the first orientation. The aerosol generating system (1) further includes a detecting circuit adapted to detect the physical orientation of the aerosol generating article (4) when received in the aerosol generating device (2). A controller is adapted to control an operation of the aerosol generating system (1) based on the detected orientation of the aerosol generating article (4).
