Abstract

Disclosed is hybrid liquid crystal lens (100) comprising: index-matching LC lens (102); Gradient Refractive Index (GRIN) LC lens (104); first driving circuit (DC) (106) configured to drive index-matching LC lens to produce first optical power (OP); second DC (108) configured to drive GRIN LC lens to produce second OP(s); and controller (110) configured to: generate first and second drive signals for first and second DCs; determine third OP(s) by processing eye-tracking data collected by eye-tracking means (112, 510) to determine optical depth at which user of hybrid LC lens is looking; select third OP(s); determine whether third OP(s) is equal to or greater than maximum OP producible by index-matching LC lens; and when so determined, determine first OP equal to maximum OP producible by index-matching LC lens and second OP(s) equal to difference between third OP(s) and maximum OP producible by index-matching LC lens.
