Abstract

This invention relates to a computer-implemented method of optimizing a reinforcement steel (rebar) cutting process. The method comprising the steps of creating and maintaining an inventory of rebar stock, receiving a plurality of disparate orders for cut lengths of rebar, performing an optimization process on the orders comprising the steps of: determining the plurality of possible cutting patterns applicable to satisfy the orders, and determining the optimal cutting pattern from the plurality of possible cutting patterns. The optimal cutting pattern factors in both the minimum amount of waste; and the minimum amount of carbon (CEQ) in the waste. In this way, the amount of waste, and in particular the amount of carbon waste, is significantly reduced.
