Abstract
The disclosure relates to a method of operating a hearing device to provide for relieving tinnitus, the hearing device configured to be worn at an ear of a user, the method comprising receiving an audio stream (SI) from an audio input unit (113); processing the audio stream (SI) in a first audio signal path (P1) into a processed audio stream; and providing an output stream (SO) based on the processed audio stream for an audio output unit (117) included in the hearing device, the audio output unit (117) configured to output the output stream (SO) so as to stimulate the user's hearing. The disclosure also relates to a hearing device for performing the method. To provide for an improved alleviation of tinnitus symptoms that may also account for a more natural auditory perception, the disclosure proposes processing the audio stream (SI) in a second audio signal path (P2), which outputs a tinnitus masking stream (SM) for relieving tinnitus into the first audio signal path (P1), wherein the second audio signal path (P2) is associated with evaluating (221, 331) the audio stream (SI) with regard to a presence of one or more preservable characteristics suitable to be preserved in the tinnitus masking stream (SM); and providing (223, 323) the tinnitus masking stream (SM) based on the preservable characteristics such that one or more of the preservable characteristics of the audio stream (SI) are preserved in the tinnitus masking stream (SM).
