Abstract
A method of determining a network quality indicator for an optical distribution network is described. The method comprises estimating an expected power level between two points of the optical distribution network, the expected power level being estimated based on respective assumed attenuation associated with intervening optical components between the two points, on an optical path ranging length, and on a power level variance allowance. In this way, an accurate estimation of what the power level between two points should be can be ascertained, taking account knowledge of the actual physical infrastructure and real-world experience of attenuation.
