Abstract

A coupling device for coupling a rod to bone or to a vertebra is provided, the coupling device including a receiving part configured to be pivotably connectable to a head of a bone anchoring element, the receiving part having a first end and a second end, a central axis extending through the first end and the second end, a channel for receiving a rod and an accommodation space for accommodating the head, the accommodation space having a lower opening at the second end, an inner surface portion of the receiving part in the accommodation space providing a first seat portion for the head; and a retainer element configured to be arranged in the accommodation space and having an inner surface providing a second seat portion for the head; wherein the first seat portion of the receiving part and the second seat portion of the retainer element form a seat that permits the head to pivot relative to the receiving part.
