Abstract

[Problem] To provide a method for producing a novel cellulose microfiber the applications of which are not significantly limited or a method for producing a cellulose fiber that serves as a raw material of a cellulose microfiber. [Solution] A method for producing a modified cellulose fiber, in which when a cellulose fiber is modified with at least any one reactant of a polyvalent carboxylic acid and a polyvalent carboxylic acid metal salt, an alkali is added to the cellulose fiber to obtain a pH of 9 or higher, the reactant is then added, and an alkali is added again to obtain a pH of 8 to 14. In addition, a method for producing a modified cellulose microfiber, in which during this production, a cellulose fiber or the modified cellulose fiber is micro-fibrillated to have an average fiber diameter of 100 nm or less.
