Abstract

A rotor case force management system maintains loads on the rotor below an abradable pumping force threshold. A system includes a shroud with an abradable section defining. A rotor is supported for rotation within the shroud to generate an axial fluid flow. The rotor includes blade tips that oppose the abradable section of the shroud's surface. An abradable system in the abradable section of the shroud includes an abradable layer facing the blade tips and a backing layer behind the abradable layer from the blade tips. The abradable layer includes a first composition and the backing layer includes a second composition. The abradable layer wears when touched by the blade tips during design operation. When, during off-design operation, the blade tips penetrate the abradable layer and contact the backing layer, the second composition provides an abradable load on the rotor that is lower as compared to the first composition.
