Abstract

An embedded backlash adjuster (166) for an overhead cam work vehicle engine system having an engine block (122) to which is mounted a valve head (164) with a valve train (182, 184) operated by a cam shaft (178, 180) that is driven by an input gear assembly (128) including a cam gear (142) mounted to the cam shaft (178) that meshes with a head idler gear (140) which in turn meshes with an engine idler gear (138), the head idler gear (140) spanning a head gasket disposed between the engine block (122) and the valve head (164), the embedded backlash adjuster (166) comprising: a plurality of mounting bolts (160); a stub shaft (162) mounted to the valve head (164) or a component of the valve head (164) by the mounting bolts (160) and supporting the head idler gear (140) for rotation about a rotation axis (A1); and a pivot member (170) extending along a pivot axis (A4) and disposed within a recess (194) in the valve head (164) or a component of the valve head (164), the stub shaft (162) being pivotable about the pivot axis (A4) with respect to the valve head (164) when not fixed securely by the mounting bolts (160) without repositioning the pivot member (170), and the pivot axis (A4) being radially offset from the rotation axis (A1) such that pivoting the stub shaft (162) about the pivot axis (A4) adjusts a mesh backlash between the head idler gear (140) and the engine idler gear (138) while maintaining a working mesh backlash between the head idler gear (140) and the cam gear (142).
