Abstract

The invention relates to designing a wind turbine component. For a given defined load case, the invention involves, for each of a plurality of defined operational parameter values, simulating wind turbine operation at the respective operational parameter value, and determining, based on simulation output, a characteristic extreme load at the respective operational parameter value. At the defined design load, the invention involves obtaining a combined characteristic extreme load for the respective defined load case using a combining function that depends on the determined characteristic extreme load, and a defined probability of wind turbine operation, at each respective operational parameter value. This is repeated for different design loads, and the invention involves determining a design load for extreme loading based on the combined characteristic extreme loads for the respective load cases. The wind turbine component is designed in accordance with the determined design load.
