Abstract

It is crucial to understand the impacts of extreme weather events on power grids. However, state-of-the-art metrics provide only limited insights on such impacts, and rely on data acquired during or after the event. Accordingly, embodiments quantify the resiliency of a power grid or other power network using a holistic set of metrics, that captures different types of resiliency, in advance of the event. In an embodiment, the quantification of resiliency may utilize a multi-criteria decision model to compute a probabilistic graph-based risk score and/or a probabilistic power-flow-based risk score. In an embodiment in which both risk scores are computed, an overall risk score may be computed as a combination of the two risk scores. The quantification of resiliency, in this manner, enables the resiliency of the power network to be proactively improved via pre-event control actions, which may implement appropriate resiliency measures.
