Abstract

A single-channel apparatus (100) implementing a method for reducing noise in spectral estimations comprises an input signal port (111) for receiving an input signal (10) that contains both direct and reflected components. A calibration switch (112) alternates the signal path between a calibration load (118), which isolates the system for measuring internal noise, and the input signal (10) for signal acquisition. These signals are processed through a single receiver chain (119) into a digital signal processor (120) which implements noise-reduction by processing the calibration and signal acquisition measurements to compute the respective autocorrelation functions, their Fourier transforms and estimations of the power spectral densities, to compute a cleaned autocorrelation function, and deliver an output (330) as spectral estimations with reduced noise. This apparatus is configured to achieve accurate spectral analysis by leveraging self-calibration, simplifying design and improving sensitivity in different applications. For example, the DSP (120) can perform a reflectometry-specific process which uses the cleaned autocorrelation function to estimate a reflection coefficient.
