Abstract

An analysis system is provided for analyzing the breath of a subject. A gas sensor is used to detect a target gas in inhaled and exhaled air of a subject. The timing of breathing inhalation and exhalation phases is determined, and a target gas concentration is obtained which is indicative of a subject-induced generation of the target gas. It is or example derived from fluctuations in the gas sensor output signal between the (i) exhalation phase or a portion thereof, and (ii) the inhalation phase or a portion thereof. This analysis system enables the breathing inhalation and exhalation phases to be resolved so that a target gas measurement can be controlled accordingly. In this way, the analysis system can distinguish between compounds or compound concentrations already present in the ambient environment and compounds or compound concentrations produced by the user.
