Abstract

A system for and method of operating a propulsion system for an aircraft is provided. The propulsion system includes a gas turbine engine (20), an accessory gearbox (42), and an electric motor (48). The gas turbine engine (20) includes a spool (37) having a fan rotor (28) with a plurality of fan blades (28A), and a pitch control mechanism (58) engaged with the fan blades (28A). The method includes: providing rotational drive from the spool (37) to the accessory gearbox (42); using the accessory gearbox (42) to drive the electric motor (48) to produce electrical energy, wherein the electric motor (48) has a predetermined maximum rotational speed limit; and controlling the propulsion system to follow a predetermined descent portion (60) of a flight profile for the aircraft, wherein controlling the propulsion system includes controlling the pitch control mechanism (58) to alter an amount of thrust produced by the fan blades (28A) by altering a pitch of the fan blades (28A).
