Abstract

A power transmitter (101) for wirelessly providing power to a power receiver (105) comprises an output circuit (303, 103) comprising a transmitter coil (103) generating a power transfer signal when a drive signal is applied to the output circuit (303, 103). A power controller (305) adapts the power level by varying the drive frequency. A measurement circuit (307) controls the driver (301) to set the drive frequency to a first measurement frequency and to generate the drive signal to have a waveform comprising at least one higher harmonic at a harmonic frequency being a multiple of the first measurement frequency. It further determines a first measured transmitter coil current by performing a first measurement of a transmitter coil current for the transmitter coil at the first measurement frequency and determining a second measured transmitter coil current by performing a second measurement of the transmitter coil current at the harmonic frequency. A frequency controller (309) controls the power controller (305) to further adapt the drive frequency in dependence on the first measured transmitter coil current and the second measured transmitter coil current.
