Abstract

A first prediction mode of lowest index and a second prediction mode of highest index are obtained. A first prediction error is determined on a template for the first prediction mode and a second prediction error is determined for the second prediction mode. Responsive to the first prediction error being lower than the second prediction error, the second prediction mode is updated (a) as being equal to an average of the lowest index and the highest index and an updated second prediction error is determined. Responsive to the second prediction error being lower than the first prediction error, the first prediction mode is updated (b) as being equal to an average of the lowest index and the highest index and an updated first prediction error is determined. Steps a) and b) are repeated until an end criterion. The intra prediction mode with smallest prediction error is selected.
