Abstract

A method of monitoring walking speed of a subject includes estimating a reference walking speed of the subject based on walking pattern variations in a test-specific pattern of a walking test over a known distance; predicting a calibration estimated walking speed of the subject using a predetermined walking speed algorithm based on data from at least one sensor worn by the subject during the walking test; determining at least one calibration coefficient based on the reference walking speed and the calibration estimated walking speed; predicting a subsequent estimated walking speed of the subject during a subsequent walking event after the walking test; and determining a corrected walking speed of the subject during the subsequent walking event by adjusting the subsequent estimated walking speed using the at least one calibration coefficient.
