Abstract

An NOx concentration estimation method uses an air-fuel ratio sensor in an exhaust system. A first catalyst and an air-fuel ratio sensor are sequentially arranged upstream from a flow direction of exhaust gas flowing through an exhaust passage connected to an engine, and the air-fuel ratio sensor is controllable to an active temperature using a heater. An output value of the air-fuel ratio sensor used for estimating NOx concentration at least when the air-fuel ratio changes from rich to lean is obtained by using a sum of a raw output value of the air-fuel ratio sensor and a predetermined offset value.
